Healthcare Law Means Changes for Nurse Management Jobs

Would it surprise you to know that President Obama’s health care law goes well beyond simply providing insurance to those who don’t have it? Indeed, the Affordable Care Act (affectionately known as ObamaCare) contains an entire litany of new regulations that will affect everything from who receives care to how services are bought and paid for.

A good example of the burdensome regulations applies directly to nurse management jobs. There is a provision in the law requiring medical facilities to allow breaks for employees who are also nursing mothers, in order to allow them time to express milk. For a nurse manager this presents a whole new set of problems.

For instance, the law states breaks must be “reasonable” in terms of length. But who decides what “reasonable” is? If one nursing mother can express her milk in 15 minutes while another takes 30, there will be questions about fairness and equal time. Then there’s the question of workers who have babies brought to the workplace to nurse rather than expressing milk and putting it in the refrigerator.

Just this one little regulation is already causing a lot of headaches for nurse managers. It provides further evidence that the health care overhaul is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Nurse Management Jobs Still Worthwhile

Despite the changes in the healthcare regulations, don’t be discouraged if you want to get into the healthcare field. Nurse management jobs are still very attractive for a variety of reasons. They offer excellent pay, a good working environment, and room for professional advancement.

Furthermore, working as a nurse manager brings with it a measure of personal satisfaction by being able to help make the lives of patients better. By your willingness to put your best foot forward your nursing staff will be encouraged to do the same and your patients will benefit.

You and Your Staff

To excel as a nurse manager requires a way of thinking that’s slightly different from what you did as an active floor nurse. In other words, before moving into management your primary focus was your patients. As a nurse manager you’re still focused on patient care, but you’re more focused on your staff as the vehicle to provide that care.

Nurse management jobs are therefore more about encouraging the success of your staff. When you’re nurses are doing well, so will your patients. When your nurses are not performing up to standards patient care will suffer.

Nurse Managers also have the added responsibility of representing their staff before upper management and other members of the healthcare team. This requires a certain amount advocacy which some nurse managers find difficult. Nonetheless, it’s part of building a solid team.

In the United States there is currently a significant shortage of nurses and nurse managers. There are nurse management jobs available in big cities, small towns, and through temporary staffing agencies. If you’re qualified and want to work, it’s out there for the taking.

The Best Tips for Healthcare Professionals to Fight Flu Season

Healthcare professionals run a much higher risk of becoming ill during flu season than the average person, simply because they are exposed to many more people who are sick. Now that H1N1 has made the flu a more serious issue, particularly for young children and aging seniors, it is a bigger public health concern than in past years. Healthcare professionals have many options for fighting the flu this time of year, but the three big ones are immunization, immune system boosting and hand washing.
Immunization
The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved a trivalent vaccine, which prevents influenza A, influenza B and H1N1. The FDA recommends that all healthcare workers get vaccinated before flu season to avoid getting sick when the illness peaks. All other people who live with or care for people who are at high risk for getting the flu are also urged to get immunized. Children under the age of five and seniors over the age of 65 are considered the biggest -at-risk- groups among the general population.

Immune System Boosters
There are many ways to keep your immune system strong during flu season. The most common-sense piece of advice for any healthcare professional is to take care of yourself. If you fail to get enough rest, eat enough, drink enough water or spot illnesses early on and act appropriately, you run the risk of running your body ragged. It’s particularly important to eat a balanced diet before and during flu season. Antioxidants, B vitamins, vitamins A and C, folate-rich foods and other immune system boosters will work wonders for combating the flu, colds and other illnesses. And while you’re at it, a little exercise never hurt anyone. It helps keep your body strong and resilient. .

Don’t Forget to Wash your Hands
Hand washing is an absolutely essential component of avoiding influenza. As a healthcare professional, you already have to wash your hands multiple times every day at work – pretty much every time you touch something or someone – but the hand washing shouldn’t stop when your shift is over. The habit of frequent hand washing in warm, soapy water may often be taken for granted, but it should never be forgotten. It is especially important to wash your hands every time you touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Keep some antibacterial hand-wipes around just in case – you won’t be sorry.

Make health Your Number One Priority

Ill tell you why. We are focusing on the wrong goal. For whatever reason, we must not perceive our weight loss as being “important enough” to achieve. So what would be “important enough” to stick to our new healthy eating habits? Your HEALTH! Nothing in this world is more important than the state of your health. Think about it, your health affects everything else in your life. Once our health is compromised we automatically change our lifestyle habits. Just look at President Clinton. Not until he had the ultimate health scare did he really change his eating and exercise habits. Lets not wait until our bodies completely have a break down before we decide to take care of ourselves. If you feel lousy, everything you do that day is lousy. Likewise, if you feel great, everything you do that day is great. So this year, lets not focus on just losing a few pounds, lets focus on Health, the #1 thing in our lives.

So ask yourself, “How important is my health to me? How do I want to live the rest of my life? Sick and feeling horrible or healthy and feeling vibrant? Do I want to play golf and tennis in my retirement or do I want to spend it in the hospital?” The answer to these questions will ultimately dictate your weight and your health for the future. Any lifestyle habit that affects your health in a positive way will automatically cause you to lose weight or maintain a good healthy weight.

Follow this checklist towards health and you will see weight come off automatically.

1.Make the time to focus on health.
The number one reason people do not eat healthy or exercise is because they “dont have the time”. But why is it that once we get sick, have a heart attack, are diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes or cancer, we all of a sudden have the time? This doesnt make any sense. We wait until our bodies have become so ill to finally take measures towards taking care of it. This is the equivalent to never getting an oil change or servicing your car and letting it completely break down before doing anything about it. Prioritize your day. What could possibly be more important than your health? Your children, yes, I agree. But guess what? If something happens to you, who will be there for your children? I know that sounds terrible but its true. How many times have we heard stories of young children losing parents to heart attacks and strokes? Choose health not only for yourself but for your children as well. Prioritize your day so that making healthy meal choices and exercising are right at the top.

2.Take a long hard look at what you are putting into your body.
For one week, read every ingredient of every food you eat. This could potentially be a scary experience. Some ingredient labels on packaged foods sound more like a college chemistry class than anything we should be eating. As a golden rule, if you cant pronounce it, chances are you shouldnt be eating it. The majority of the foods you should be eating shouldnt even have an ingredients label. They should be vegetables, fruits, raw nuts, chicken, fish, eggs, meat. If you make 90% of your diet, fresh food, I guarantee you will significantly change your weight and your health. No time to make fresh food? (please refer back to #1). Cook more than one portion at a time when you do cook so that there are always healthy leftovers in the fridge. You can always have for lunch leftovers from the night before. Cook several portions of one meal and freeze some. A good example of this is healthy soup or turkey chili. Put a portion of chili in a small Tupperware and freeze. You can grab this when in a hurry for lunch or dinner.

3. How much are you eating?
In the United States, our perception of one portion is extremely distorted. Restaurant portions are about 3 times more than what we should be eating in one sitting. If we become accustomed to seeing this much food on our plate at a restaurant we tend to do the same when we are at home and serve ourselves. According to a study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, women are eating 300 more calories a day and men 168 more calories than 20 years ago. All it takes is 100 extra calories a day to gain 10 pounds a year.

For one week, reduce your portions at lunch and dinner by half. There is no need to “clean your plate”. Most times whats on your plate is double what you should be eating anyway. If you feel some hunger in the afternoon, add one small apple with a handful of raw nuts as a snack. Your body will quickly become accustomed to the smaller portions and you will eventually not be able to eat as much in one sitting as you did before. Remember, you have access to an abundance of food every day. You dont need to eat it all at once.

3.Drink WATER!
Dehydration has directly been linked to several forms of diseases including colon cancer, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels. Many people also mistake thirst for hunger. So it may not be that youre hungry all day, you may just be thirsty and dehydrated. In due time, dehydration will cause a gradual gain in weight from overeating as a direct result of confusion of thirst and hunger sensations.

Take a look at what you are drinking each day.

Coffee or Soda (Diet Coke included)? The caffeine in both will dehydrate you even more and will cause you to feel hungrier during the day.

Diet drinks and sodas? The artificial sweetener actually enhances your appetite and increases food intake.

Orange Juice and other Fruit Juices? The sugar and calories can add up to 10 teaspoons of sugar per drink, which can be anywhere from 150-200 calories. Not to mention the fact that sugar eventually makes you crave more sugar.

Every person should be drinking half of their body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75 ounces of water each day. If you drink coffee or any other caffeinated beverage during the day, the ounces of water needed increases.

4.How much do you move each day?
Your body was designed to move! Your heart is a muscle and must be worked just like every other muscle in your body. You dont have to join a gym to move, you just have to challenge your body and your muscles each and every day.

The two best time saving exercise options I always suggest to clients are:

1.Go for a walk. You can go for a walk anywhere and anytime. No time you say? Please refer back to rule #1.

2. Set up your home with some free weights and an exercise ball. You will be amazed at the number of exercises you can do with just your body, some free weights and a stability ball. If you dont know how, hire a trainer to show you or get a good book. Get into the routine of scheduling your exercise time each and every day. No ifs, ands or buts. Make your exercise time more important than phone calls, laundry, errands or lunch dates.

Make a promise to yourself that this time will be about health, not about short term weight loss. Really evaluate how you are treating your body on an everyday basis. Is that the same way you would treat a highly valuable, expensive piece of equipment? Because thats what your body is. There is no amount of money in the world that will buy you another one, so you might as well take really good care of the one you got!

Treating Adult Dyslexia – The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program

The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program uses phonemic awareness as a technique to help adult dyslexics acquire the necessary skills to read proficiently. By using phonemic awareness dyslexic listeners are able to hear, recognize and control minimum units of sound that are called phonemes. In essence users can breakdown words into letter(s) and/or sounds, one at a time.

The phonemic awareness system believes that the basis of difficulties associated with deciphering and spelling is the complex way a person assesses the identity, sound sequence and number(s) that are found within words. This inability is termed to be “weak phoneme awareness”. A dyslexic adult is generally thought of to have difficulty with his or her phonological processing which is associated with “phoneme awareness”. This weakness is the reason why a dyslexic adult tends to add, exchange, skip, and reverse sounds and letters when they read. Adults with dyslexia can see words correctly however they cannot judge if what they see will correspond with what they say. It is because of this difficulty that they are unable to find and correct errors in spelling, reading and speech.

The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Programs goal is to successfully provide preventative and remedial solutions to the reading, spelling and speech issues that occur due to adult dyslexia. If an adult dyslexic individual chooses to train with this type of program they will discover that various mouth movements produce different speech sounds. Sounds and word order can be confirmed by using the kind of sensory information trained by phonemic awareness. Through practice and commitment reading, writing, spelling and speech skills can be improved and corrected. Research has also shown that added improvements in overall speech and language skills have occurred using this method.

During participation in this program people are assigned grade levels based on their achievements. The program lasts four to six weeks and is usually intensive treatment with therapy lasting up to four hours per day. However, there are options that provide lighter levels of therapy if an individual chooses. It is important to remember that the more frequent and intensive the treatments the greater chance of faster results. Treatment results vary depending on the individual and the severity of the dyslexia.

This kind of program is available at a Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes Center. These centers are available in over fifteen states in the United States and in the United Kingdom as well. There are materials available to the public that are included in the program such as a manual with a detailed presentation of the steps that will be taken in the program. Program outlines and example discussions are also included. Support products are needed for the program which includes a classroom kit, a program clinical kit, training videos, a practice CD, and a testing kit. These products are included when registration is completed for the program.
